More Scholarship opportunities will soon be available for young Grenadians. This is as a result of a successful meeting held between Prime Minister Dr. The Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell and a 7-man delegation headed by the Moroccan Minister of Industry, Commerce and Finance, the Hon. Salah Edinne Mezouar. The Moroccans agreed to provide at least three (3) scholarships to Grenadians annually with the possibility of further negotiations for an increase in that number. Additionally, the delegation proposed to grant training in specific areas and provide development strategies that could benefit Grenada.

Monday 23rd April, 2007- St. George’s: Staff and Students of the Grenada Boys Secondary School are highly anticipating the completion of existing rehabilitation and expansion work on the school. The school which was severely damaged as a result of Hurricane Ivan on September 7th 2004 also suffered addition destruction as a result of two major fires in 2005. In the interim the students have been housed on the grounds of the school in temporary classrooms provided by the Government of Grenada at a cost of EC$ 893,741.77.

Rehabilitation work on the St. Paul’s Government School is progressing steadily. The school like many other schools on the island was severely damaged as a result of Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

The Government of Grenada has secured a Poverty Reduction and Human Resource Development (PHRD) grant from Japan to finance the preparation of the Grenada Skills Enhancement Project which is aimed at facilitating the training of youth and unemployed persons in marketable technical and vocational skills. The grant is valued at US$150,000.00

For some time now the Ministry of Education has been focusing on the issue of improving literacy achievement in the nation’s schools. Early intervention at the primary level and the implementation of “best practices” in the instruction of Reading are two ways in which we have been seeking to raise Reading levels in primary schools. Even at the secondary level, we are ensuring, through diagnosis and continued instruction that our students do not continue to “fall through the cracks” and indeed attain the required literacy standards for that level.

The training is expected to be of two days duration. Students will be exposed to developing viable project proposals for funding, using the Student Improvement Manual, together with gaining skills in leadership to assist with the sustainability of projects.
