Ministry Of Education Embarks On Literacy Audit

For some time now the Ministry of Education has been focusing on the issue of improving literacy achievement in the nation’s schools. Early intervention at the primary level and the implementation of “best practices” in the instruction of Reading are two ways in which we have been seeking to raise Reading levels in primary schools. Even at the secondary level, we are ensuring, through diagnosis and continued instruction that our students do not continue to “fall through the cracks” and indeed attain the required literacy standards for that level.

As we continue to ensure that all our children can read and write, we are recognizing that there is a clear lack of concrete data on the following:

  • Literacy practices of teachers and principals at the school level
  • Literacy levels of students
  • Literacy behaviours/practices of students in the classroom
  • Literacy behaviours/ practices of students in the home or at the community level.

Such data will assist us in the development of training programmes for teachers and curriculum development in Literacy for students. To this end, the Ministry of Education is embarking on a Literacy Audit of all its schools, both primary and secondary. Questionnaires are being circulated for all our principals, Literacy Co-ordinators and selected teachers and students in the school system.

Questionnaires for teachers, students and parents will be forwarded to schools shortly.
