New Online Education (B.Ed) Programmes At UWI

The Ministry of Education is pleased to announce that, in direct response to the educational needs of the region’s school teachers, UWI has developed a series of online Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) programmes.

Mindful of the requirements of those in full-time employment for equal access to accredited university degree programmes, one of the plus points of the online B.Ed offerings is that participants can simultaneously pursue a degree programme and maintain full- time employment status.

The launch of these versatile, internet-based courses marks a new era in teacher education in the region where teachers no longer need to sacrifice their income earning capability, or apply for scholarly leave in order to realize their higher education aspirations; students are not deprived of their gifted teachers; and governments are spared the expense of supporting teachers on educational leave as well as the costs of teacher replacements.

The initial suite of online B.Ed. programmes offered through the UWI Mona Campus includes degrees in Literacy Studies, Mathematics, Secondary English, History, Modern Languages and Computer Science Education / Information Technology. By 2007/2008 academic year, a B.Ed. Science degree as well as Masters programmes in Educational Measurement, Teaching and Early Childhood Leadership will be added to the mix of offerings.
