Ministry Of Education Launches Adult Literacy Center At The Richmond Hill Prison

A total of twenty two inmates comprising eighteen males and four females today began receiving instruction under the Ministry of Education ’s Adult Literacy Programme “ Yes I Can”.

The programme which aims at providing all persons in Grenada , Carriacou & Petite Martinique especially youths and adults who are unable to read and write with the opportunity to do so free of charge, will be launched at an initial 19 centers in the coming week.

According to Adult Literacy Coordinator Mrs. Jean Bowen “education in prison is a very specific sector of adult education, aimed at socially disadvantaged groups. Access to adult learning is not only a basic human right; it is a crucial step towards the reintegration and the rehabilitation of prisoners”.

The Adult Literacy Programme is a joint initiative between the Government of Grenada through the Ministry of Education and the Government of Cuba.

Literacy Specialist Professor Oscar Sanchez Perez, who addressed inmates and prison officials at today’s launch, encouraged the inmates to embrace the opportunity provided as it provides a means for personal fulfillment; social change; active citizenship; and sustainable development.

Ag. Prison Superintendent Wesley Beggs, expressed his appreciation for the pragramme and encouraged the inmates to embrace this wonderful opportunity being provided through the Ministry of Education .
