UNESCO TO LAUNCH THE SECOND PHASE OF ITS YOUTH PATH PROJECT

St.George’s, Monday 17th November,2008:The Grenada National Commission for The United Nations Educational Scientific Organisation (UNESCO) in conjunction with the Ministry of Education is preparing for the official launch of the second phase of its Youth Path Project scheduled for Tuesday 18th November,2008 in the parish of St. John.

UNESCO in making a contribution the United Nations Millennium Goal: "Halving Poverty by 2015" the Youth Poverty Alleviation through Tourism and Heritage Project (Youth Path) was initiated.

Youth Path aims to provide disadvantaged youth especially out- of –school-youth with opportunities to acquire skills and knowledge which will enable them to establish their own businesses and improve their livelihoods while preserving the natural and cultural heritage of their communities. The project also aims to improve the tourist product of the area and train youth in sustainable cultural/natural heritage preservation, innovative tourism, business initiatives and life skills.

The first phase of the project was successfully completed in the parish of St.David in December of 2007 where 15 young people between the ages of 13-29 were trained in various entrepreneurial skills such as business start-up, Computer training, Marketing, Tour Guiding and Design and Development of Tourism Products.

Presently there are several other Caribbean countries participating in the Youth Path Project such as Jamaica, Dominica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St.Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago and the Bahamas among others.

The official launch of the second phase of the Youth Path Project will be held on Tuesday 18th November at the St.John's Pastoral Centre, Gouyave, St.John at 4:30pm.
