Grenada Students Earn Highest Honors At Midwestern State University

Grenadian students made a tremendous impact at Midwestern State University ’s fall commencement ceremonies on December 16th. All four of the undergraduates who earned degrees secured honors.

Two Grenadians, Stacey Paryag and Annette Thomas, earned the highest honors: the President’s Medal for Excellence as the top graduate in their respective colleges. In. addition, they graduated summa cum laude, having earned grade point averages of 3.95 on a scale of 4.0.

Stacey Paryag is the daughter of Yolande Paryag of St. Patrick’s and a former teacher at St. David’s Catholic School . She earned a bachelor of science in clinical laboratory science as a medical technologist. Annette Thomas is the daughter of Dennis and Janice Thomas of Black Bay , St. John’s . She earned a bachelor of science in radiological sciences. She is a former teacher at St. Rose Modern Secondary School. Her older sister Patricia previously won the President’s Medal at Midwestern in 1999.

Two other Grenadians also graduated with honors. They were among the 24 Caribbean students and 600 others who graduated at the ceremony. Charmaine Munro-Glean earned magna cum laude honors with a bachelor of science in chemistry. She is the daughter of Margaret Glean and Naaman ‘Cat” Williams of Gouyave, St. John’s , and a former teacher at St. Mark’s Secondary School. Naudin Alexis earned a bachelor of science in biology with cum laude honors. She is from Harvey Vale, Carriacou, and a former teacher at Bishop's College in Hillsborough.

One Grenadian, Devon Superville of New Hampshire, earned a master of arts in psychology. An ordained Adventist minister, Superville specializes in rehabilitation and community counseling. He was previously stationed in Carriacou before embarking on advanced studies.

“This collective achievement form students who came from a tiny island is nothing short of mind boggling,” said Dr. Betty Stewart, Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics. “It gives me great pride as a woman of colour.”

Fifteen new students from Grenada will be accepted to Midwestern State University this August, accounting for more than 700 recruits from the Caribbean in the history of the fourteen year old programme.
