Carriacou Cops 5 Wins Under The Theme ‘Traditional Childhood Games’
Wednesday 23rd January 2008- St. George’s: It appears that young Grenadians know quite a lot about ‘Traditional Childhood Games’.
Carriacou copped 5 of the 9 winning spots in the Inaugural National Student Art Exhibition, organised by the Patron of the Arts Fund in the latter part of 2007. Students from Hillsborough Government School took first and third place in the 5-8 age group, and first and second place in the 9-11 age group. First place in the 12-18 age group went to a student from Bishop’s College.
The exhibition was open to all public and private primary and secondary schools under the theme ‘Traditional Childhood Games’. Twenty-one schools submitted a total of 92 entries, the majority of which were executed in either crayon or coloured pencil as the preferred media. Each entry was accompanied with a written description of the artwork. The winners are:
Age Group 5-8
First Kellie Knights, Hillsborough Government, Carriacou ‘Games of long ago’
Second Joshua Francis, St Mary’s Junior, Tempe ‘Fun in the sun’
Third Joseph Stiell, Hillsborough Government, Carriacou ‘have fun at school’

The winning students will be presented with prizes, and all participants will receive certificates of participation. The 92 entries will be initially displayed at the Gallery of the Grenada Arts Council, located at the Grenada Craft Centre on Lagoon Road and open to the public for one month from Tuesday February 12. It is hoped that the entries will then be displayed briefly at the winning schools. The Fund feels this exhibition has the potential to spark happy memories, giving greater focus on the value of art as a means of expression for young people and as a way to preserve both past and present traditions.
The Patron of the Arts Fund established by then Agency for Reconstruction and Development (ARD) from a post-Ivan exercise that utilised art as a therapeutic tool. The fund is an autonomous entity directed by a Management Team.
