School Sensitization on Domestic Violence.
Wednesday 28th November 29, 2007: The Ministry of Social Development began its School Sensitization Campaign on Domestic Violence on Wednesday November, 28th 2007 at the Westerhall Secondary School.
The sensitization campaign is part of activities for the sixteen days of activism to commemorate International Day to Protest Violence against Women.
The Campaign aims at increasing awareness on the issue of Domestic Violence among the nation’s youths.
According to Merle Walker, Coordinator of the Domestic Violence Unit within the Ministry, it is critical to educate the children about the ill effects of Domestic Violence.
She said “it’s also important for them to be aware of the warning signs”. According to her, “in so doing the Ministry is endeavoring to nip the problem in the bud”.
Walker added that starting with the children is obviously a preventative measure, since the right values will be instilled at an early age, thus educating them on how to respect and not abuse persons. The sensitization Campaign will continue for the next two weeks.
