Grenada National Museum December Event

Thursday November 22, 2007- St.George's: At the time of European discovery, Grenada was inhabited by the Kalinagos, referred to as the Caribs.

European settlement followed accompanied by conflict with the original people. The Europeans developed a plantation economy, which brought to the island workers from Africa as slaves and labour Madeira and India and more recently from Barbados. After the abolition of slavery and the collapse of the plantation system there were significant movements of Grenadians seeking jobs and wider opportunities abroad to:

  • Panama building the Panama Canal
  • Cuba cutting cane
  • New York building the subway tunnels
  • Canada and the USA providing farm labour
  • The UK and the USA providing nursing services
  • Canada providing trained teachers for the elementary schools
  • The UK after the 1939-45 World War providing transport workers, factory workers, medical personnel
  • The oil refineries of Aruba and Curacao and the Pitch Lake in Trinidad
  • The Merchant Marine with sailors manning the oil tankers going around the Horn
  • The war fronts in all wars fought by Britain and America since the 1900's.

There are many other examples of Grenadians, who may never have left our shores but have made tremendous contributions in making many of our institutions and communities the success that they are today. What better way to celebrate the "season of giving" than to exemplify and pay tribute to those who gave us so much and in some cases continue to do so!

The Grenada National Museum would like you to help us tell the story of such resilient, brave and selfless people, some of whom may have come from your school or your community. We would like you to participate in a pre- Christmas event at the Museum, scheduled to run from the 10th-16th of December. Each participant will be expected to showcase the following:

  • Highlights of your school, with the main feature being a tribute to a famous alumnus of your school, or a person in your community who has contributed significantly to Grenada in music, in dance, in Science and Technology, in politics, in education or another field; either locally or abroad.
  • The uniforms of your school if they have changed over the years.

The presentations will take the form of live exhibitions, where participants will depict the above information using posters, short skits, poetry or music. Any other appropriate suggestion is welcome.
