Minister Calls For BAR To Attend To People's Business

Monday October 15th 2007, St. George’s: Minister of Legal Affairs Hon. Claris Charles, has called on the President and members of the Bar Association to withdraw statements being made about a tuberculosis outbreak in the prisons and to immediately cease all actions which may cause delays in the judicial system.

Minister Charles said that the claims of a tuberculosis outbreak in the prisons have been strongly refuted by the Ministry of Health, The Chief Medical Officer and the Prison Commissioner and that there was no basis to take any action which might disrupt the court system.

Minister Charles said that she was very concerned that many persons were being denied timely access to the court process because of the actions and statements made by the Bar Association. She noted that she had heard from many people who had paid legal fees and were now being deined access to the court system based on erroneous statements. She called for common sense to prevail and asked that members of the Bar Association attend to the people’s business in a professional and timely manner.
