Annual School Gardening Competition
Wednesday 5th September 2007- St. George’s: The Agricultural Science Unit within the Ministry of Education will be holding its annual School Gardening Competition beginning September 3, 2007 to February 1st, 2008.
The competition will be held in three categories:
CATEGORY A Primary Schools with adequate land space
CATEGORY B Secondary Schools with adequate land space
CATEGORY C Schools with inadequate land space utilizing alternative means of crop production
Each school in Categories A & B are expected to cultivate (3) crops, one from any of the groups listed below. Schools in Category C are expected to cultivate one (1) crop selected from any of the groups listed. The following criteria will be used for judging.
• Field sanitation and general appearance
• Use of appropriate cultural practices
• Productivity
• Record Keeping
• Innovation
Crops to be cultivated must be selected from the following groups:
GROUP 1 Leafy vegetable; e.g. lettuce, cabbage, patchoi, celery, etc.
GROUP 2 Fruit vegetables; e.g. tomato, cucumber, ochro, peppers, etc.
GROUP 3 Root crop; e.g. carrot, sweet potato, beets, etc.
GROUP 4 Flower crop; e.g. cauliflower, broccoli
GROUP 5 Legume; e.g. beans
GROUP 6 Cereal: e.g. corn
All schools are encouraged to participate. Your usual co-operation is anticipated.
