UNESCO Science Chief To Visit The Caribbean
Wednesday 29th August, 2007- St. George’s: Prof Walter Erdelen, Assistant Director General (ADG), UNESCO (Natural Sciences), will be making his first visit to the Caribbean during the period August 31- September 5, 2007.
Prof. Eldelen’s main mission is to present a Report on the Status of Science and Technology (S&T) in the Caribbean to Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister responsible for S&T in the CARICOM quasi-Cabinet. This Report was commissioned by UNESCO and the CARICOM Steering Committee on S&T which is chaired by Prof. Harold Ramkissoon. It was prepared by Dr. Khotso Mokhele, Former President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Research Foundation of South Africa, who visited the Caribbean in December, 2006.
Prof. Eldelen will then proceed to the CARICOM Secretariat in Georgetown where he will meet with CARICOM Officials to discuss the report. Meetings are also scheduled with President Bharrat Jagdeo and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Prof. James Rose.
Prof. Eldelen’s next stop will be in Trinidad where he will hold meetings with Prime Minister the Hon. Patrick Manning, the Hon. Hazel Manning, Minister of Education, Prof. Bridget Brereton, Acting Principal of the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies and Prof. Kenneth Julien, President of the University of Trinidad and Tobago. Meetings are also planned with members of the scientific communities in Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.
Prof. Harold Ramkissoon will be accompanying the ADG on his Caribbean visit which is being coordinated by CARISCIENCE and the UNESCO National Commission in Grenada, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.
