University and Government meet to discuss development

The Government and the St. George’s University are looking to deepen their cooperation in an effort to make education more accessible. This morning, Prime Minister Dr . The Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell met with a team from the University headed by University Chancellor Dr. Charles Modica.

During the meeting the two sides discussed several areas of cooperation including increased scholarship funding to needy students, and the role of the University in the development of the country. Prime Minister Mitchell and Chancellor Modica both emphasised the role of education in the development of Grenada and the need to empower young people. Prime Minister Mitchell told the Chancellor of the grave situation some young were facing especially after Hurricane Ivan. The Chancellor and other members of the University team informed the Prime Minister that the University was already taking steps to assist many needy students.

The University and the Government will continue their talks tomorrow at a special meeting with the University’s management and a Government team led by Minister of Education Claris Charles and Minister of Works Clarice Modeste Curwen. Prime Minister Mitchell is also expected to be on campus tomorrow on a tour of the university. The Prime Minister will meet with members of the university community and tour the areas of new development.
