30 computers donated to St. Rose Modern Secondary
Thursday 30th April, 2008- St. George’s: A special assembly was held on Friday 18th April 2008 by the Principal and Staff of the St. Rose Modern Secondary School to accept a very generous gift of 30 fully working and high specification computers, donated by Highgate Wood School (HWS) in London, England. The computers are estimated at a total cost of over EC $70,000.
The computers were officially handed over in the ceremony by Mr. Leon Mitchell (LBM) who is Head of Mentors at HWS.
This is not the first gift that has been donated by HWS to St. Rose. In 2004, after the destruction by hurricanes Ivan and Emily, the school received a donation of £1700.00 to help towards repair and replacement of equipment. This money was part of £2500.00, raised on a night dubbed, Gig 4 Grenada. The other £800.00 was donated to St. Johns Roman Catholic School, which also helped them replace the roof in their lunch hall. LBM is a former pupil of the St. Johns R C School
In presenting the computers, Mr. Mitchell said "I'm extremely honoured and proud that Highgate Wood School would have chosen me to handover these computers over to St. Rose ". I've been bowled over by the enthusiasm and sense of appreciation shown by the students and staff of St. Rose". That's what it's all about really; helping to make a positive difference to someonelse's life. I guess that's what attracted me to the gogouyave.com Talkshop, in the first place. You have a special group of individuals on there, some of them have never even met, yet they are able to initiate and implement projects such as extending the Douglaston Cemetery Shed and the Headmasters (Educators) Scholarship Fund. This shows that when we decide to show a little selflessness and consideration to others, we can all make a vast difference to our community."
"As well as my gratitude to the Head teacher for giving me this opportunity to put something back into my community. I would like to extend my thanks and acknowledgement to: Ethna (Ethlyn) Glean, Mrs. Christina Freeman, Richard Arnold and Mrs. Pauline Ashby. Without these people's help and initial intervention, none of this could have happened".
In accepting the computer form Mr. Mitchell, principal Gemma De Allie said "We are extremely grateful to all the students, parents and staff of Highgate Wood School. Especially, Mr. Patrick Cozier (Head Teacher), Mr. Mitchell and Ethna (Ethlyn) Glean, an ex pupil of SRMSS."
"Before Mr. Mitchell handed these computers over, we only had eight working computers and was wondering how our students would cope with their upcoming Information Technology exams. These computers couldn't have arrived at a better time".
