GRENADA POSTAL CORPORATION LETTER WRITING COMPETITION
St. George’s Grenada, Thursday 28th, January 2010, MOEPRU – When was the last time you sat down to write a letter to a friend? I’m sure this is a question that requires some thought.
The onset of the information technology brought with it a reduction in handwritten letters as people are now instantly connected to family and friends through the internet.
The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development is now collaborating with the Grenada Postal Corporation in an effort that will get students to write.
A letter-writing competition is being held for students twelve (12) to fifteen (15) years of age on the theme “The importance of talking about AIDS and protecting yourself against it”.
Principals and Teachers are being urged to encourage eligible students to participate in the competition. Participants will write a letter to someone, explaining why it is important to talk about AIDS and protect yourself against the disease.
Competition entries must reach the Ministry of Education on or before Friday February 26, 2010. The top three entries will receive prizes and the winning entry will be entered into the United Postal Union International Letter Writing Competition to be held in April 2010.
The Universal Postal Union (UPU) invites 191 member countries, - Grenada being one of those - in the international Letter-Writing Competition for young people.
Countries first organize a national competition through their postal corporation, ministry or regulator to select a letter to represent them at the international level.
The top national entry will then be submitted by the Grenada Postal Corporation to the UPU for international judging. The top three entries of the International competition will be awarded UPU medals and other prizes.
Letters being submitted for the competition must be recent and unpublished and the compositions must be in the form of a letter, with all necessary parts of a letter included.
It must stick strictly to the theme and not exceed 800 words and can be typed or hand written.
Each entry must be accompanied by a cover page, with the following details:
Name
Age
School
Number of words
Endorsement by teacher or principal as proof of child’s work.
First prize is $500.00 plus an Oxford Dictionary; second prize $300.00 plus an Oxford Dictionary and third prize: $200.00 plus an Oxford Dictionary. The school with the most entries will receive a Desk Top Computer
