CURRICULUM EXPANSION PROGRESSING SMOOTHLY
St. George’s Grenada, Saturday June 20, 2009 - The Ministry of Education is moving steadfastly with plans for expanding the schools curriculum at the start of the new school year.
Curriculum development is a process that includes the design, development, implementation and evaluation of curricula and the Curriculum Development Unit is charged with the responsibility of operationalising the Curriculum Development Process.
Accordingly, the work of the unit is to design, develop, implement, monitor, evaluate and review curricula that are appropriate and relevant to the needs and interests of our country. It is in this light that the Ministry of Education is reviewing the present curriculum with a view to expanding it to meet the needs of all students.
Head of the Curriculum Development Unit Mrs. Andrea Phillip says that it is not an easy process but the unit is working unwaveringly to ensure that they are ready.
“Really and truly what we’re doing is trying to refocus what was traditionally an academic curriculum into something that is wider and more all-encompassing.”
The head of the unit says that much work has already gone into the process with several discussions between the Minister and staff in the unit. She says teams have been identified within the unit to look at some of the specific areas that need to be either developed or infused.
Mrs. Phillip pointed out that her unit is being guided by the highest academic-achieving first-world countries such as the Netherlands and Austria who place much priority on personal development. She says the idea is to move away from the purely academic to a curriculum that would take a more holistic approach to developing the student.
Curriculum development is a longwinded process, however, Mrs. Phillip says they are working to get the process started at the beginning of the new school year.
The details are still being fine-tuned but the revised curriculum would place emphasis on anger management, citizenship education, and technical skills among others along with the academics.
